Calcite is a commonly occurring carbonate mineral related to alabaster and most likely takes its name from the German 'Calcit', a term first used in the nineteenth century from the Latin word for lime (calx, genitive calcis).

As a common constituent of sedimentary rocks, calcite has been used for a great many purposes. Ancient Egyptians carved figurines and statues from it and during the Second World War high grade optical calcite was used for gun sights and anti-aircraft weaponry. It does also make highly attractive jewellery too :))
